Is Chichen Itza open? New closure Weeks away we have announced the partial closure of Chichen Itza, which was during the Chichen Itza Equinox 2021. Kukulkan downstairs without viewers due to the Covid-19 disease, as a measure to prevent new contagions.

The holy week in Mexico is about to start, as well as the spring break for schools and jobs. Due to upcoming vacations, the Yucatan government has decided to closed again the archaeological site of Chichen Itza.

new chichen itza closure

The Mayan Site will be closed from April 1 to 4 to avoid crowds and to take care of visitors and stop the increase in Coronavirus cases in the State. Yucatán is currently orange at the state traffic light, and that is one of the reasons why a visit to Chichén Itzá will not be allowed.

The INAH indicated that the site will open again on April 5 from 8 am to 4 pm following health protocols, as usual. In this way, if you are planning to visit Chichen Itza during these days we recommend you to look for other archaeological zones in Yucatan or you might want to postpone your Chichen Itza Tour.

Kukulkan nights at Chichen Itza are back

If you didn’t know Chichen Itza at night becomes a magical experience with a light and sound show. The castle or El Castillo Pyramid is the main character in this scene. The Kukulkan pyramid lights up with colorful images representing the Mayan culture. After a magnificent walk tour in the Chichen Itza Mayan ruins, you’ll be able to enjoy 25 minutes of this fantastic show. Live this magic experience and enjoy a mystical night in Chichen Itza.

Kukulkan Nights are back

Sounds great right? Well, this spectacle has been closed for 10 months since the pandemic begins in March 2020. But, now cultural authorities decided to reopen the event.

Kukulkan nights back last February 2nd, due to the Covid-19 the spectacle has the same protocols as Chichen Itza. One of the protection measures is that only 30% of the capacity will be allowed, which means that up to 300 people could enter.

The show starts at 7:00 pm whoever wants to assist can buy the tickets at Chichen Itza’s entrance at 3:00 pm. Or you can call 9991-26-99-25, or send a message (conventional or WhatsApp) to make a reservation. We recommend you buy your tickets before the show due to the limited spaces.

Sanitary measures
Cultural authorities will be very strict in this regard. We all know the main sanitary measures, but it is not enough to repeat them. The correct use of the mask that covers the mouth and nose is mandatory. As well as the application of antibacterial gel, the measurement of temperature with a thermal camera, shoes disinfection in special mats, and as already indicated, allow only 30% of the capacity, among the most important.

However, you might be wondering, is Chichen Itza open during New Year?

The answer is yes! Chichen Itza opens every day of the year unless Covid-19 does not allow it. We know that it is not the “new year” for the Mayan calendar, But wouldn’t it be a special trip to Chichen Itza on January 1rst?

Of course, it is, Mayans were an awesome civilization with such wonderful people. They believe in goods, astronomy and its temples were sacred. This is your best chance to enjoy the Yucatan Peninsula.

What to do on New Year at Chichen Itza?

The first thing you need to know is local people work on this day, no matter what; Mexicans are very hard-working people. Therefore, you will definitely find many open businesses to have lunch or get some drinks.

Visiting Chichen Itza on January 1rst is a great idea, you won’t regret it. You will walk through those incredible Mayan temples to welcome the New Year. We highly recommend you to do the Chichen Itza tour in the morning as soon as the archaeological site opens. With fewer crowds, you’ll have the chance to enjoy the site better.

You will be able to admire the Castle known as the Kukulkan Pyramid, the ball court, the temple of the warriors, and more Mayan Ruins at the place

Your first 2021 cenote swim in Yucatan

Visiting Chichen Itza and not visiting a cenote? What type of  Yucatan Peninsula trip would it be?

cenote ik kill yucatan

cenote in yucatan

There are hundreds of cenotes in Yucatan, and around Chichen Itza. In this way, visit a cenote is a mandatory stop on your Chichen Itza tour.  The best way to receive the Year is also swimming in those clear and refreshing waters. Cenotes were sacred for Mayans. Swimming in a cenote gives you even more. It stirs your soul and connects you with the ancient Maya. We recommend you visit Ik kill Cenote.

A Mayan Ritual

Some cenotes offer a Mayan ceremony before your entrance. But there are some people that offer this kind of ritual which includes temazcal. Temazcal is a sweat bath and as we all know, sweating has long been used as a therapy. The ancient Maya used it for healing and relaxing. The cleansing takes place in a circular dome filled with burning hot rocks. And the shaman’s ritual prepares you to harmonize your inner energy with cosmic influences. This is a very powerful physical and mental experience. Perfect experience for this new year.

Is it possible to climb Chichen Itza Pyramid?

The Kukulkan Pyramid, also commonly known as El Castillo, is the most impressive building in the Chichen Itza archaeological site, and one of the tallest in all of the Mayan architecture.

Unfortunately for visitors, no, Chichen Itza Pyramid is not allowed to climb. Luckily for all the locals and culture lovers, the main Mayan Building of Chichen Itza can’t be climbed. In this way, we contribute to preserving this sacred site.

is it possible to climb chichen ita pyramid

Chichen Itza, Mexico – Tourists climb the steep stairway up the Mayan pyramid of Kukulkan, 1980s-1990s

Years ago, the Chichen Itza Pyramid used to be claimed by tourists. Could you imagine the view? But one day, a couple of tourists had an accident while they were climbing, one of them died. These visitors were older adults and maybe they felt tired and then happened the worst. Due to this event, the cultural authorities decided to ban this activity since then.

Current Situation at Chichen Itza’s archeological

We got some rumors about Chichen Itza’s illegal climbing. Apparently, there are some people offering this “tour” in Chichen Itza which allows you to climb the Castle. We don’t exactly know how this works but it seems that you enter as an investigator out of the visiting hours.

We highly recommend you not do these kinds of activities in any sacred place you go to. You contribute to deteriorating this important Mayan site in Mexico. So, if someone what to offers you a “special package” do not accept. Buy your Chichen Itza tickets at the entrance of the archeological site, that’s the only official way to enter.

Also, we recommend you follow all the new protocols for Covid-19 in Chichen Itza.

THE WEIRDEST OBJECTS FOUND IN THE CHICHEN ITZA CENOTE

It is no secret to anyone that the Mayans used the cenotes to perform rituals. These places were considered a window to the world of the dead called Xibalba.

Around the Yucatan Peninsula, there are more than 10 thousand unexplored cenotes. However, barely 20% of them have been discovered, including the Sacred Cenote in Chichen Itza.

According to history, this place was the scenery of big offerings, among them; women sacrifices, as well as gold pieces that were thrown into the cenote.

For Mayans, the gold was appreciated, not for its cost but for being a malleable metal. They could build their own things that’s why most of the objects were from this material.

Found objects in Chichen Itza Cenote
